You will need CD burning software that supports the .iso extension in order to burn the file and make a boot disc. Try PowerISO, it's small, fast, and user friendly.
Directions to install:
(this section will be updated soon with a more in-depth walk through)
1. First burn the image file to a standard CD-R or CD-RW disc. We recommend using a new
CD-R and burning at the slowest speed possible. (Most software can go as low as 4x)
2. Next, put the CD in your drive and restart your computer. Verify that your boot order reads the CD drive before the Hard Drive. Most systems have a boot option when you first start up.
3. If you want to give Ubuntu a test run without installing anything, choose the first option when the CD boots up. This allows you to run the operating system directly from the CD. Ubuntu runs best when it's installed on a clean hard drive. However, it is relatively simple to install it on the same HD as Windows and have a dual-boot.
4. To install onto a hard disk or flash drive, choose the 2nd option, "Install Ubuntu". Make sure you have space to create a separate partition for Linux, otherwise you'll have to reformat. Ubuntu doesn't require much hard disk space, however in case you feel like installing more applications, it's nice to have some buffer room. We recommend dedicating at least 10GB. For a flash drive, the minimum space required is about 3.5GB.
5. After the instillation is complete, the PC will reboot and the
GRUB boot loader will display after POST if you have other operating systems installed. From here you can choose which operating system to boot into. By default, the top choice will be Ubuntu Desktop and read something similar to "Ubuntu 9.04, kernal 2.6.24-16-generic". After 10 seconds of no action, it will boot into Ubuntu. This may frustrate some people who want to continue using Windows as their primary operating system. Here is a
link with instructions describing how to change the boot order in GRUB.
